Rite of Confession

March 1, 2026 @ 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm

We are offering the Rite of Confession, sometimes called “the reconciliation of a penitent.” If you grew up Anglican, you may have heard the old line: “All may, some should, none must.” That is still the heart of it. Confession is not a requirement for being forgiven. Jesus is enough. Confession is a gift for when you are tired of carrying what you were never meant to carry.

Here’s what it is, from an Anglican perspective. In our Sunday liturgy we confess our sins together, and we hear God’s promise of mercy spoken over us. Private confession is that same gospel, applied personally. You name your sins honestly, out loud, to God, with a priest there as a witness and a guide, and then you hear the assurance of God’s forgiveness spoken directly to you.

Why would anyone do this? Because sin is not just “breaking rules.” Sin is a weight. It clings. It distorts us. It trains us to hide.  Confession is process of bringing those things into God’s light and experience His mercy. As Scripture reminds us: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1.9). Notice that last phrase. Forgiveness, yes. Cleansing too. Confession is one of God’s ways of cleansing the soul.

If you feel stuck, if you keep circling the same shame, if you have been carrying this alone, confession is for you. Confession is not about shame. It is about getting free and receiving grace.
