Francis of Assisi (1181–1226) was a unique and devout individual. He abandoned a life of luxury after reportedly hearing the voice of God, who commanded him to rebuild the Christian church and live in poverty. He is remembered for his love of animals and nature. For this reason, He is the patron saint of animals and ecology.
