Light in the Darkness

As we begin the season of Advent this Sunday, we will be blessed to have our bishop here with us. We have 15 people being confirmed or received. Remember that there is only one service on Sunday, which will start at 9 a.m. The service will be followed by a special reception to celebrate the bishop’s visit and the confirmations, and also to celebrate the 60th wedding anniversary of George and Mary Ellen VanDeWyngaerde. The bishop will also bring us up to date on life in the diocese, so please plan to come as we worship, learn, and celebrate.

Advent is a season marked by the hope of God’s coming. My prayer for each of us this weekend, and this season, is that, as we experience the presence of God in worship, we might catch a glimpse of God’s activity in and through Christ of renewing all of creation. As the confirmands publicly affirm their faith, and each one of us renews our own baptismal covenant, we all join in saying, to use the words of John 1:5, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.”

In the midst of so much darkness, we need to be reminded, again and again, that Christ came into the midst of darkness, and the darkness did not – and will not – overcome the light that he brings.

Come, Lord Jesus,

Chris
